Vistapen®

What is Vistapen®?

Vistapen® is a micro-needling device that uses 12 microscopic needles to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars and pigment.  The device makes approximately 1,300 micro holes in the skin per second.  This causes a micro-trauma to the skin that will induce collagen to remodel and deposit new collagen, providing a smoother appearance and texture to the skin.  As well, the creation of the micro-holes allows us to penetrate the skin barrier and place medication or hyaluronic acid (fillers) directly into those holes for a more targeted approach.

Does it hurt?

Most of the process can be completed without any topical anesthetic.  If we are using the pen on the forehead, topical anesthetic can be helpful.

Is there downtime?

There is downtime, but it is minimal. As we are making microscopic holes in the skin, the body is able to heal quickly.  The treated area will be red and have swelling for 2-3 days and you may apply makeup within 24 hrs after treatment.

How many treatments are necessary?

Most patients require four to six treatments, depending on the target we are treating (wrinkles vs scars vs pigment).  These are performed every four to six weeks until we have achieved the desired results.

How long does it last?

This is a permanent treatment.  The micro-needling causes collagen to remodel, tighten and lay down new collagen, which is permanent.  We obviously continue to age, but this helps slow the process and produce visible improvement in tone and texture.

What are the risks or side effects?

The most common side effects are temporary swelling and redness.  If we are treating around the mouth, and you have a history of cold sores, this can reactivate the cold sores (we will pre-treat so this does not occur).  Hyperpigmentation (darker pigment) can occur, but this is rare.  Overall, this is a well-tolerated and safe procedure.
